If you are experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia, check your blood glucose levels and if they are low, then eat something that contains fast-acting glucose, such as:, ,

  • 4 oz. of regular soda pop
  • 3-4 glucose tablets
  • Glucose gel, per manufacturer’s directions
  • 4 oz. of fruit juice
  • 3 to 5 pieces of hard candy that can be chewed quickly
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar or honey

Recheck your blood glucose 15 minutes after taking the fast-acting sugar to make sure your blood glucose is not still too low. If it is too low, have another serving of sugar and recheck your blood glucose.,

If your symptoms become more pronounced, you may have to rely on others to place sugar gel between your gums and cheek. The person who is assisting you should rub the inside of your cheeks gently to make sure the sugar is being absorbed.

If still experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia, call your healthcare provider. If the symptoms have stopped, but an hour or more remains before you eat your next meal, be sure to have a snack.

How to Treat Severe Hypoglycemia ,

If you are having a severe hypoglycemic emergency, you will not be able to treat yourself and will need someone around you to give you a prescription medication such as Novo Nordisk GlucaGen® HypoKit®.
