About insulin
What is insulin?,
Insulin is made by the human body naturally. Each time there is a rise in blood glucose levels, insulin is released by an organ near your stomach called the pancreas.
When you eat a meal, your body breaks down some of the food you eat into glucose. That glucose, or sugar, goes into your blood and your blood glucose levels rise, prompting the pancreas to release insulin.
Insulin works like a key, unlocking your cells so that the glucose in your blood can enter.
When you have diabetes, there is not enough insulin made by your body or it does not work to unlock the cells, leaving you with too much glucose in your blood. This extra glucose is what makes people feel the symptoms of diabetes, such as thirst and tiredness.
